Employment question:

My ten-year-old son is disabled. My employers are unsympathetic to my problems and reluctant to let me have time off work. Is there anything I can do?

Good Lawyer Guide's response

Every employee has a legal right to take time off to look after dependants (which includes children). Typically this will cover the situation where the child falls ill; note that the illness does not have to be serious or life threatening, and can simply be the result of a deterioration of an existing condition, which means you have to take unexpected time off work.

In addition, if your son is ‘disabled’ you might have a claim under the Disability Discrimination laws, even though it is your son (not you) that is disabled.

You may also wish to read around the subject on the internet and specifically a case called Coleman v Attridge.
