Employment question:

My father has just retired in February from 28years service from a large global company. He was an Assistant Team Manager. In addition to his salary he was on a bonus scheme which ran from December to December but paid out in March. His team achieved the target and his manager received their percentage in their March salary. As my dad retired in February the company is refusing to pay his bonus. The reason he has been given is that he was not on the payroll in March. Is this legal? Many thanks for your help.

Most contracts of employment are cleverly drawn in favour of the employer. When it comes to bonuses the employer usually hides in the small print two things.Firstly that the payment of any bonus is discretionary.Secondly that the entitlement to bonus depends upon the employee being employed at the time when payment is due. So your Dad needs to check out his employment contract or get a lawyer to do so.
