Employment question:

Can my employer refuse to allow me to take annual leave? My contract says I need to give a week's notice - which I have done - for any leave I want to take. Now they are saying there is no cover and so I cannot take it. Is this legal?

The starting point will generally be your contract, but the Working Time Directive also adds a layer of comlexity! In general though, you will usually find that your employer is entitled to control holidays and when they are taken so that it can ensure adequate cover. You might want to look at a sueful Q&A on the G&B union website: http://www.gmb-westmids.org.uk/id35.html
