Talk to your local planning authority – you may find you do not need to have get formal planning permission. If, for example the property is currently used as snack bar, you may get away without planning permission. But it is advisable to double check this with your local planning authority before you apply.

If you do need formal planning permission, you must apply for a Lawful Development Certificate with your local council. Detailed plans and drawings are usually required and a fee must be paid. Applications are usually dealt with within eight weeks.
