Wills question:

Should I make a Will? I understand that without a will my husband will get everything anyway so is there any point?

It is only partially true that without a will your husband will get everything when you die. Firstly, he would automatically inherit your personal belongings and only the first £250,000 of the estate if there are any children, and the first £400,000 if there are not. Even if you are not worth that much now, you could be in the future.

Secondly, suppose your husband dies before you, or you are both killed in an accident: who would you want to inherit your estate then? You need to consider various eventualities: for example, would you want your children to inherit your estate or, if they have died, then your grandchildren? You may also want to leave specific items such as jewellery to specific people or leave money to charity.

In addition, if you have children you should appoint a guardian for your children in your will. And if you are worth a substantial amount – perhaps in the future if not now! – you can use a will to minimise the amount of inheritance tax you may have to pay on death. You should see a solicitor to give you some proper legal advice.
