Employment question:

I work in public services in a role which involves face to face contact with customers and solving their disputes. At the end of May 2012 I lied to my employer stating that I had resolved an issue with a customer when I had not. I was found out and apologised straight away to my employer as well as to the customer.I made amends with the customer and resolved the original issue. The customer ,when asked by my employer, refused to make an official compliant against me. However, my employer has decided to discipline me. I dont mind as I admit I am at fault. But it has been nearly 2 months since that incident and I have not had word from my employer as to what is to happen despite my union rep enquiring on my behalf. I am besides myself with worry and cant sleep and having constant headaches. I am wondering ,do I let sleeping dogs lie or do I start seeking legal advice? The last thing I want is to make things worst and instead of getting a lesser punishment by waiting for my employers to make a decision , I get a more severe punishment by making a fuss. N.B. for the record, this was the first time I have lied and the reason, looking back is due to the work load I had been given which was way more than what my other colleagues had. Anyways, any suggestions from anyone? Thanks.

Before your employer can discipline you, an investigation into the issue must take place. They then need to follow their own discplinary procedure and should not delay unreasonably. If this reached 12 weeks, then you may wish to remind them that you have been told that you will be discplined and that this is causing you stress. On the other hand, it may make them respond quickly and you could be disciplined.
